class="elementor-widget-container">

When you have lived with emotional abuse, manipulation or an unhealthy relationship for long enough, one of the hardest things can be knowing what is real.

You may find yourself asking:

Am I overreacting?
Am I too sensitive?
Is this actually abuse?
Is it jealousy — or is one of my boundaries being crossed?
Why can’t I just leave?
Why do I still miss someone who hurt me?
Why does my body react when my mind tells me everything is fine?

I have asked many of these questions myself.

This page is a growing collection of information and tools for understanding unhealthy relationship patterns, trauma responses, boundaries, anxiety and healing.

It is not about diagnosing another person.

It is about understanding what is happening to you.

Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse does not always look dramatic from the outside.

There may be no bruises.

There may also be beautiful days, affection, apologies, laughter and moments when you feel deeply loved.

That can be part of what makes it so confusing.

Emotional abuse can include:

Repeatedly making you doubt your own perception

Humiliating or belittling you

Controlling who you see or what you do

Excessive jealousy or accusations

Monitoring you

Punishing you with withdrawal or silence

Making you responsible for their emotions

Repeatedly crossing your boundaries

Making you afraid of their reactions

Alternating affection with rejection or cruelty

Making you feel that you constantly need to prove your love

Slowly isolating you from yourself or other people

Making you feel guilty for having normal needs

Rewriting events until you begin questioning your own memory

One incident does not necessarily define an entire relationship.

Look at the pattern.

Ask yourself:

Do I feel free to be myself, or am I constantly adjusting myself to keep the peace?

Manipulation & Red Flags

Manipulation can be difficult to recognise because it often happens gradually.

Gaslighting

Gaslighting is a pattern that causes you to question your perception of reality.

You may remember something clearly, yet after enough arguments you begin wondering whether you misunderstood everything.

Eventually the question changes from:

“Why did you do that?”

to:

“Is something wrong with me?”

That shift matters.

Blame shifting

Every problem somehow becomes your fault.

You raise something that hurt you, but instead of discussing what happened, the conversation becomes about your reaction.

You end up apologising even though you were the one who was hurt.

Moving the goalposts

You try harder.

You explain better.

You become calmer.

You give more.

But somehow it is never quite enough.

The requirements for peace keep changing.

Love followed by withdrawal

Intense affection followed by coldness can create enormous emotional confusion.

The good periods can become something you desperately try to get back.

That unpredictability can make a relationship extremely difficult to leave.

Control disguised as love

“I only worry because I love you.”

Concern and control are not the same thing.

Love does not require you to surrender your privacy, friendships, independence or right to say no.

When Love Becomes an Addiction

One of the hardest things I have learned is that knowing someone is unhealthy for you does not automatically stop you from wanting them.

You can understand something intellectually and still feel an enormous pull toward it emotionally.

A relationship filled with intense highs and painful lows can create a powerful cycle:

Pain → distance → longing → reconciliation → relief → hope → pain again.

The relief can feel almost euphoric.

And eventually you may not only be chasing the person.

You may be chasing the feeling of relief when everything becomes good again.

This can help explain why leaving an unhealthy relationship can feel so much harder than outsiders imagine.

Missing someone is not proof that you should return.

Love is not proof that a relationship is safe.

Trauma Bonding

A trauma bond can develop when periods of fear, pain or mistreatment are repeatedly mixed with affection, relief, apologies or intense closeness.

You may think:

But nobody understands our connection.

When it is good, it is incredible.

Maybe this time will be different.

I know what happened, so why do I still want them?

The attachment itself can be real.

That does not mean the relationship is healthy.

Sometimes healing means grieving someone you still love.

Your Body Remembers

Trauma does not live only in our thoughts.

Sometimes the body reacts before we consciously understand why.

You might experience:

Racing heart

Shaking

Tightness in the chest

Dizziness

Restlessness

Difficulty sleeping

Racing thoughts

Feeling constantly alert

Difficulty concentrating

A strong urge to check or seek reassurance

Feeling unable to relax even when nothing is happening

Becoming overwhelmed by uncertainty

Feeling exhausted after conflict

Suddenly freezing or going blank

Your nervous system may have learned that uncertainty, conflict or certain behaviours mean danger.

That does not automatically mean that the situation in front of you is dangerous.

It means your body deserves to be listened to — while you also give yourself time to understand what is actually happening.

Common Trauma Responses

Most people know fight or flight, but trauma responses can take several forms.

Fight

You become angry, defensive or confrontational.

Flight

You need to escape, stay busy, run, work, clean or do anything that keeps you moving.

Freeze

Your mind goes blank.

You cannot decide what to do.

You may feel disconnected or unable to speak.

Fawn

You try to make everything okay.

You apologise.

You become agreeable.

You ignore your own needs.

You concentrate on keeping the other person happy because that feels safer than risking conflict.

None of these responses defines who you are.

They are ways the nervous system attempts to protect us.

Hypervigilance

After living with unpredictability, your brain can become extraordinarily good at looking for danger.

A changed tone.

A delayed message.

A facial expression.

Someone becoming quieter.

A small change in routine.

You notice everything.

Sometimes that ability protected you.

But later it can become exhausting.

An important part of healing is learning to separate:

What I know

from

What I fear.

For example:

Fact: Someone has not replied to my message.

Fear: They are rejecting me, hiding something or leaving me.

The fear deserves compassion.

But it is not automatically evidence.

Anxiety & Grounding

When anxiety takes over, trying to solve your entire life usually makes things worse.

First, come back to the present.

5–4–3–2–1 Grounding

Notice:

5 things you can see
4 things you can touch
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste

Feel the ground

Place both feet firmly on the floor.

Notice the pressure beneath them.

Look around and remind yourself where you are.

Slow your breathing

Rather than forcing huge breaths, breathe gently and allow the exhale to become slightly longer.

Move your body

Walking, stretching, running or simply shaking tension from your hands can sometimes help the body release some of its activation.

Delay major decisions

When your nervous system is highly activated, everything can feel urgent.

It usually isn’t.

You can give yourself permission to say:

I do not have to solve this tonight.

Boundaries

A boundary is not:

“You are not allowed to do this.”

A boundary is:

“You are free to make your choices, and I am free to decide what I can live with.”

That distinction changed a lot for me.

Examples:

“I need honesty in a relationship.”

“I don’t want a relationship where I regularly feel excluded.”

“I need consistency, not only reassurance when I am upset.”

“If something affects our relationship, I need us to be able to talk openly about it.”

“This doesn’t work for me.”

A boundary does not require the other person to agree that it is reasonable.

And you do not need to prove that something would bother everybody else before you are allowed to decide that it matters to you.

Jealousy or a Boundary?

This can be complicated.

Feeling uncomfortable does not automatically mean you are jealous.

But feeling uncomfortable does not automatically mean someone else has done something wrong either.

Ask yourself:

What exactly happened?

What part of it hurts me?

Is there an agreement being broken?

Am I responding to what is happening now, or something that happened to me before?

Have I clearly communicated what I need?

Does this relationship repeatedly require me to accept something that conflicts with my values?

The goal is not to decide who is right.

The goal is to understand what you can genuinely thrive in.

Words vs. Patterns

Words matter.

But patterns tell us much more.

When trying to understand a relationship, look over time at:

Consistency

Follow-through

Initiative

Honesty

Openness

Respect

Prioritisation

Accountability

Whether your boundaries are respected

Whether difficult conversations lead to change

Whether you gradually become part of each other’s lives

Someone can say beautiful things and mean them in that moment.

The deeper question is:

Does the relationship being created match the relationship being described?

Relearning Self-Trust

Emotional abuse can damage your ability to trust your own judgement.

You may start asking everyone else what they think before asking yourself.

Healing means slowly reversing that.

Try asking:

What happened?

What did I feel?

What do I actually know?

What am I assuming?

What do I need?

What choice would I make if I wasn’t afraid of losing this person?

Other people can give perspective.

But they do not have to live inside your choices.

You do.

Why Leaving Can Hurt So Much

Leaving does not instantly remove attachment.

You may feel grief.

Relief.

Panic.

Longing.

Anger.

Freedom.

Loneliness.

And sometimes all of them in the same day.

You may even miss the person more after leaving.

That does not mean leaving was wrong.

Sometimes you are grieving not only the person but also:

The good moments

The future you imagined

The person you hoped they would become

The version of yourself who believed it could work

The intensity

The familiar cycle

Healing is rarely a straight line.

Choosing Yourself

Choosing yourself does not mean becoming selfish.

It does not mean never loving deeply again.

And it does not mean building walls around yourself.

For me, choosing myself means learning that I can love someone without abandoning myself to keep them.

I can miss someone and still stay away.

I can understand someone’s pain without accepting behaviour that hurts me.

I can listen to another person’s needs without erasing my own.

I can love and still have boundaries.

And sometimes the most loving sentence I can say to myself is simply:

This is not enough for me anymore.

Healthy Love

After chaos, healthy love can initially feel strangely quiet.

There may be less intensity.

Less chasing.

Less uncertainty.

Less adrenaline.

Healthy love should leave room for:

Individuality

Friends and family

Privacy

Honest disagreement

Boundaries

Consistency

Mutual effort

Safety

Trust

Repair after conflict

Growth

You should not have to disappear in order to keep a relationship.

When You Are Not Sure

You do not always need to immediately decide whether someone is good or bad.

Sometimes a better question is:

How do I consistently feel in this relationship?

And then:

What happens when I communicate what I need?

Watch what happens over time.

Do words become actions?

Does openness increase?

Are boundaries respected?

Does the relationship become safer and clearer?

Or do you keep having the same conversation while nothing really changes?

Patterns take time to reveal themselves.

Give yourself permission to observe them.

A Small Reality Check

When your thoughts are spiralling, write two columns.

What I know

Only observable facts.

What my fear is telling me

Everything you are interpreting, predicting or imagining.

Then add a third:

What I can control

Your communication.

Your boundaries.

Your
